Public Truth-Telling Sessions

What is a Public Truth-Telling Session?

The commissioners have established 5 public sessions at various locations across the state. Public sessions are opportunities for Vermonters to share their truth in a public setting. All statements should convey individual experiences as related to discrimination due to Vermont state laws and policies. These sessions will be recorded. They will be broadcast for the public, and witnesses will be invited to attend in person.

While these sessions will be available in a hybrid format for virtual viewing, no statements will be accepted from participants joining remotely.

What Do You Need To Prepare?

There is a registration process prior to telling your public truth-telling statement.  The registration process will include choices regarding:

  • publishing preferences (ex: website, social media, VTRC final report)
  • support needs
  • basic information about your identity and experiences

To have a better understanding of some of the information that will be covered and questions that will be asked, review the online submission form pdf (link to it)

What To Expect?

  • Registration Encouraged: We strongly recommend registering online in advance to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Guidance and Support: Upon arrival, the VTRC will provide volunteers and support guides to assist you throughout the process.
  • Public Setting: Your truth will be shared in an auditorium-style setting, with commissioners, the general public, and honorary witnesses present to hear your story.
  • Time Frame: Each truth-telling statement will be scheduled for 30 minutes. It is not mandatory to use the entire time allocation.  If truth-tellers from a public session require a longer length of time, they may schedule a private session or supplement their session with written or other means.
  • Healing Opportunities: After sharing your truth, you will have access to various avenues for healing, including the following examples:
    • Ceremonial practices
    • Meditation
    • Silent rooms
    • Art expression
  • Resource and Discussion Tables: Explore historical research and records of interest. You may also talk with our General Counsel about any laws or policies that may be part of your truth.
  • A Welcoming Environment: The VTRC aims to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, offering food, drinks, and compassionate care.
  • Trauma-Informed Support: All volunteers and staff are trained in cultural humility and trauma-informed practices to ensure a respectful and understanding environment.
  • Video Recording: Your truth statement will be recorded on video. As this is a public process, confidentiality cannot be provided in this setting. If you prefer to submit your truth confidentially, alternative options are available.

The VTRC is committed to providing a space where you feel valued, supported, and heard.

When And Where Will These Public Spaces Be Offered?
