VTRC Community Art Project - facilitated by Aurora Berger
The VTRC is creating two art projects: A collaborative zine that can be shared physically and digitally in alignment with the VTRC's final recommendations; and a physical piece of art that can be placed in a prominent public setting as a visual reminder of the work that has been done and the work that needs to continue to happen.
What is a Zine?
A zine is compiled from art, writings and images submitted by the public during VTRC hearings. By creating a PDF of the zine, we can make these tellings accessible to the public as well as by publishing the zine on-line. There are some stories that cannot be expressed in words.
The physical piece of art, drawing inspiration from many artists, such as Mickalene Thomas, Kerry James Marshall, David Stapleton and many more. This art will be a large multi-media piece, drawing from what art is submitted to the VTRC.
Zines are a vehicle for expression of ideas, art and independent thought.
They are radical communication and dissemination of information, self-publishing and anti-institutional.
Zines were found in activist movements, dating back to the 1940's.
Artists helped to create flyers and zines that simplify issues for broad audiences.
Created from paint, collage, and ephemera, this work of art will provide a persistent reminder of the work and goals of the VTRC.
Zines capture a culture in a way that mainstream, conventional and often exclusionary models of publishing cannot hope to achieve. Zines represent stories being told by people in the way that they want to tell their story. That unfiltered voice. The power of expression. These are creative voices in the process of finding themself. Sometimes it might not be perfect, sometimes it might stumble and falter and slip, but it is there. It bursts with life. It tells a story that needs to be told by the people who tell it. -- LH Johnson
Ask yourself:
- What does it look like to be a Vermonter?
- What does Vermont need to apologize for?
- What does an apology look like to you?
- What are your dreams for Vermont in the future?
- What does telling your truth look or feel like to you?
