What Are Virtual Truth-Telling Sessions?
Virtual public truth-telling sessions in 2025 will be held twice. This provides an opportunity for individuals who wish to give their truth-telling statement but are unable to attend in person due to the following reasons:
- No longer reside in the state but once lived in Vermont and were impacted by Vermont laws and policies
- Unable to leave your home for any reason
- Facing transportation challenges
- Safety concerns
What do you need to prepare?
There is a registration process prior to telling your truth-telling statement. The registration process includes:
- confidentiality preferences
- publishing preferences (ex: social media, website, VTRC final report)
- support needs
- basic information about your identity and experiences
To have a better understanding of some of the information that will be covered and questions that will be asked, review the on-line submission form pdf (link to it)
What to expect?
- Registration Encouraged: We strongly recommend registering online in advance to ensure a smooth experience. Registration link will be provided before the session.
- Guidance and Support: Upon arrival to the virtual space, the VTRC will provide volunteers and support guides to assist you throughout the process.
- Public Setting: Your truth will be shared in a public virtual room, with commissioners, the general public, and honorary witnesses present to hear your truth-telling statement.
- Time Frame: Each truth-telling statement will be scheduled for 30 minutes. It is not mandatory to use the entire time allocation. If truth-tellers from a public session require a longer length of time, you may schedule a private session or supplement the session with written or other means.
- Healing Opportunities: The VTRC will offer a debrief space with the support person.
- Trauma-Informed Support: All volunteers and staff are trained in cultural humility and trauma-informed practices to ensure a respectful and understanding environment.
- Video Recording: Your truth statement will be recorded on video. As this is a public process, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in this setting. If you prefer to submit your truth confidentially, alternative options are available.
The VTRC is committed to providing a space where individuals feel valued, supported, and heard.
